Radioactive

Several years after the incident, I went back to see what had become of the old place. It wasn't the way I had remembered. It was smaller and the layout was different, but the one thing that was the same was the danger I had experienced. The eerie room was my reminder of how it had all begun and what I had lost.

  1. I knew my Rubik's cube had to be somewhere in the rubble. I just had to keep an eye open for radioactive zombies.

  2. I searched the ruins for about forty minutes before getting to a dark hallway. I was sure I remembered playing with the Rubik's cube down that very same hall when the alarm sounded and the evacuation order had been issued. The hall looked kinda scary, so I was hesitant to enter. Then I heard something... a soft, groaning sound. There was another sound that I couldn't quite place.. sort of a tapping, slurping sound. I thought it sounded like...maybe a dog chewing on a bone..? I couldnt' see anything down that dark hall and i wasn't going down there not knowing exactly what it was making that sound. Then I remembered the little flashlight on my keychain. I pulled the keychain out of my pants pocket and turned on the flashlight. Sweeping the light around the dark hall, at first I didnt see anything but the rubble littering the floor... but then, far into the long hallway, I thought I saw something moving! It was a tall, gaunt and pale... and it was lumbering toward me as it chewed something in its skeletal hand. It had to be a zombie! I was horrified as I imagined what it could be that it was chewing on.
I was torn between spellbound curiosity and sheer terror as I backed slowly away, waiting for it to come into the light and close enough for me to get a good look at it, but not close enough to actually make me the next thing it chewed on.
I watched in morbid fascination as it staggered closer, still chewing on whatever it was.. AS it came into the light, I could see that what it was chewing on was colorful.. bright, jewel toned diamond or square shapes embedded in black.. whatever it was looked like it had been melted.. probably in the fallout. Then it hit me! Not the zombie, I mean it dawned on me. What it was chewing on was my melted Rubik's cube!

  3. So I ran towards the zombie in anger and fear only thinking about how much I wanted my Rubik's cube back. I tackled the zombie and it hit the ground with a sloosh! I punched the zombie in the face repeatedly hoping to get the cube back. I paused for a moment and saw that the Rubik's cube was even farther in it's mouth.''How am I going to get it out without getting bit."? He thought for a moment while punching him in his face.
